Call for Scores
As a selected composer, you are expected to attend two or three rehearsals, a dress rehearsal and a concert. During your time at the rehearsals, you will have the chance to talk with the performer(s) (and conductor, if applicable), to discuss your work. There may be an opportunity for small revisions and/or experimenting.
Many workshops have a guest composer-in-residence who is an established figure in Canadian music. The composer-in-residence may give a lecture and/or discuss your work with you and the other selected composers. In addition, composers on the CCMW Board may attend and form and ad-hoc panel for discussion and critique.
It is an invaluable experience for emerging composers to work closely with established, professional composers and performers. Their suggestions will give you great insight into the real-world of composing for concerts. It is indeed rare to be given such large chunks of time with professional players in an open and supportive environment, where discussion and interaction is encouraged and celebrated.
Selected composers will likely need to find accommodation while in Toronto. While the workshop is free, travel expenses are your responsibility. The Canada Council has travel grants for composers attending concerts of their works. The deadline is usually six weeks ahead of the travel date, so plan accordingly.
